Water that gets past a single slate soaks into the batten below, then the rafter, then the ceiling. Catching it at the slate stage keeps the repair small. Leaving it a season can mean replacing timber too.
We find the entry point first
Where a stain appears inside is rarely where the water gets in. On a slate roof, water can travel along the back of the slates and down a batten before dropping. We look at the covering, valleys, flashings and ridge above and around the stain so the repair lands in the right place first time.

Roof repairs: your questions
How much of my roof needs to be accessed for a repair?
Only what's needed to reach the fault safely. Some repairs can be done with ladders and a roof ladder, others need a tower or scaffold, particularly on taller Harrogate townhouses. We'll say which in the quote.
Can slipped slates be put back without replacing them?
Often, yes. Where the slate is sound but the nail has rusted through, it can be refixed with a slate hook or tingle. Broken slates are replaced with matching ones.
Why does my roof only leak in certain weather?
Wind-driven rain from one direction can force water under a lifted slate, a gap at the verge or a loose flashing that stays dry in ordinary rain. Knowing when it leaks helps pin down where.
Do you repair roofs on listed buildings?
We carry out like-for-like repairs on older properties. If your home is listed, check with North Yorkshire Council before any work that changes materials or appearance.
What should I do before you arrive?
